Matt Schlueb,
Architect of seriously fun homes.
After 25 years of practicing architecture, I have come to believe that for a house to be truly comfortable and provide genuine shelter, it needs to be playful. I started SCHLUEBarchitecture out of my own house Villa Vuoto, to find a better way to design and build. And, along this journey, I am continually reminded, children can be the best teachers.
So, I approach the process of creating homes, with their passion for exploring the world. First, fermata e forte, an entropic loosening, to find the child buried inside, relying on intuition more than thinking. This can be done many different ways, by finger painting, modeling playdough, hideaways under tables. Kids are serious about having fun and a home can be too.
After minds are openned, childhood perspective restored, a house is no longer an assembly of materials and functional failures. Rather, the inanimate comes alive, resonating with expression, persona, emotional gesture. Only then, will storytelling gather hidden truths.
Sketches on paper or in chipboard, caricatures illustrating defining traits, studied for possibilities, advantages, leanings, are followed by drawings detailing features and character, until a house emerges and is documented for realization, preserving the sensitivities and playfulness of childhood.
Any house can be fun. Although many have lost this playfulness, comfort, shelter, it can easily be restored by a child. Alternatively, a seasoned navigator can offer this service, an architect serioius about fun. Either way, we got to get moving on things like that.
